Shape Theory

This character uses mainly square shapes to define his strong personalty, with a mix of circular language to show his kind hearted side

Shape theory is the practice of using basic shapes such as squares , triangles and circles to create a characters personality. Examples are such as anger from Inside Out , he is full a square which shows us hes strong and reliable yet hes more closed of and has a "wall between others".

OverWatch Analyisis

What is Overwatch

Overwatch is a team-based game developed by Blizzard Entertainment. It has garnered a large following both within the gaming community and across the world. The objective of the game is for two teams of six to compete in various missions where objectives vary depending on the map. Featuring characters such as, Diva, Tracer and Mercy.

What makes it different to other games

There are many aspects that make Overwatch stand out from other games in its genre such as I'ts art style, characters personalities and abilities as well as customizable abilities for each player character that allows them to be more suitable for certain roles during battles. Additionally, its real time strategy elements require advanced tactical decision-making methods based off preset objectives rather than just reaction during fights allowing every match up to have an unpredictable yet fun outcome with every match played differently regardless of skill or rank levels within both competing teams.

Was it successful

A week from its launch, Blizzard reported over seven million Overwatch players with a total accumulated playtime of 119 million hours. Blizzard reported more than 10 million players by June and has continued increases in the player count, with 60 million players in April 2021.

Were there any failures

The game failed simply because of the lack of content delivered midway through Ow1 and the start of Ow2. The dev’s abandoned a popular game in Favor of pursuing PvE, at the cost of what made their game popular. It would've been fine if PvE was amazing, but obviously it didn't even release due to how poorly it played.

Animation

Overwatch is known for it fluid and lively animation, unlike other shooters who reuse assets with stuff like shooting, reloading and running the Overwatch team has unique everything about a character. For example, Bastion and Road Hog are polar opposites, ones a calm and still robot whilst the other is a crazy and erratic mechanic. Bastons reload is clean and still like a robot, it sleek and make only a subtle rattle. On the over hand Road hogs reload is messy, he shoves some nuts and bolts in his gun he carelessly flips the lid on is gun. A simple animation tip they use to make the characters have more emotion is the use of their hand. It’s a first-person shooter so they can’t and animation to facial expressions and such so they add small details to how they hold there gun and even what there hands do when they run. For example Junk Rat , when holding his gun he will twitch can shake however Genji is an assassin so he’s still and delicate with his weapon.

Art Style

It has a unique style in the shooter game genre (e.g. COD TF2) its more saturated and high contrast in colours and characters which gives it more cartoony approach. The background is vibrant and feel clean compared to other shooters who’s darker and rough backgrounds match with its grittier tone, Overwatch has a light-hearted stylised tone, that doesn’t take itself to seriously. The use of bevel edges to make points less jagged shows that it not a serious and upsetting game. Overwatch has more of an audience to pre-teens, lack of blood, fun visuals and has fun and unique characters. This game follows the normal archetype of shooter characters, the tanks the snipers and the medics.

However, Overwatch has changed those attributes to create a whole new genre of possibilities. Example, Diva. Most games that have tank characters, big and buff men who shoot massive mini-guns (example Heavy from TF2) yet diva is a small women she uses her huge pink mech suit. This is anomaly when it comes to tanks, even female tanks are depicted as buff women. Even so Diva is loved by the masses for her aesthetic of being a tank character yet having a cute aesthetic. Again, normally tanks are depicted like cave men, not smart and blood hungry so to have this dainty woman pull up in her bright pink mech suit and destroy the team people find it comical.
